„Facing 20thousands of your friends!“
It was definitely more than the 20,000 fans mentioned in “Super Trouper” who came to see the performance by
THE REAL ABBA at this year’s Donauinselfest. Equipped with colorful umbrellas, rain ponchos and
rubber boots to keep out the mud, the spectators braved the elements despite the fact that there had even been
talk of calling off the event after several days of heavy rain.
Following the opening address by Vienna Mayor Michael Häupl which was broadcast throughout the festival grounds
on giant video screens, and after an appropriate introduction by star moderator Peter Rapp,
THE REAL ABBA opened the proceedings on the “Wien Energie / Radio Wien / Krone / Festbühne” –
the largest stage on the island – together with their outstanding live band, before yielding the stage to such
giants of the business as Manfred Mann, Thomas D and Antonello Vendetti.
Due to flight delays, hours of heavy rain and the associated technical difficulties, the soundchecks could
not be conducted as planned – forcing THE REAL ABBA to “fly blind” through the first
song “Waterloo.” Drawing from their many years of experience, the musicians and technicians mastered this
problem with aplomb – and those in attendance witnessed the usual perfect performance by the band.
For more than an hour, the audience rode a wave of ABBA magic (fitting in view of the wet conditions),
enthusiastically diving into the festivities of the weekend and making the performance the biggest
career highlight of THE REAL ABBA to date.
In great veneration, the band closed the show by dedicating its last song “Thank You For The Music” to
the King Of Pop, Michael Jackson, who had passed away the night before. And like a sign from God, the
heavens then opened up and showered their blessings on countless cheering spectators.
Following the show, the promoter glamorously thanked the band over champagne for its professionalism
and flexibility, promising to continue supporting THE REAL ABBA in the future.
All involved are already looking forward to the next round...
